I don’t want to spoil the book for you, but Peter Bregman’s book FOURSECONDS suggests that all you need is 4 seconds.  In those four seconds you can stop counter-productive habits and behaviors and replace them with healthy productive habits.

In the time that it takes to take a deep breathe in and exhale completely – 4 seconds – things can change. It’s that simple!

Bregman asserts that 4 seconds is just long enough to disrupt our default behaviors and catch ourselves.

The next time you are tempted to begin your typical counter-productive default process, simply breathe in and out.
