Fr. Jonathan Currier went off to Harvard, thinking he wanted to be a mathematician, but God and Abelian algebra intervened. Unable to penetrate the obscure abstractions of Nils Abel’s brilliant mind, he concluded that the world and his GPA would be better off if he chose another profession. Captivated by the preaching of Harvard Chaplain Peter Gomes, he became convinced God might be calling him to the ordained ministry instead.
At Union Theological Seminary in New York City, he fell under the spell of the Episcopal Church, which sealed his fate! After his confirmation in 1982, he took a meandering path toward ordination that included stints as a foster care caseworker in Brooklyn and a math teacher and track coach at a boys’ boarding school outside Charlottesville, Virginia.
Finally ordained a priest in 1990, Fr. Jonathan has served parishes in Albany, New York and New Carrollton, Maryland before coming to Lancaster. He loves preaching, Bible study, and listening to people’s stories. An actor’s son, he is a natural ham, so he is also not above displaying his chops in church-sponsored plays and musicals. He has been married for almost thirty years to Ann Wheaton. They have two grown sons, Alex and Michael.
