Nelson Roth Discovers “A Wonderful New Tool to Use in my Ministry”

Earlier this month I uncovered a fascinating article about the “economic halo effect” of churches and their local communities. This study measured the economic value of 12 churches and other faith communities, and what they’re worth to their surrounding neighborhoods.

Nelson Roth of Relevant Ministry is an excellent example of the halo effect—contributing to the economic, spiritual, physical and emotional needs of the Gulf Coast. In a nutshell, Relevant Ministry is building up the body of Christ along the Gulf Coast, which was devastated several years ago by Hurricane Katrina.

Nelson was a participant at one of our recent Accelerated Coach Training Programs. Here’s his take-away on the impact that coaching will have on him and the ongoing work that he is part of.

Pam (Pam Roth) and I (Nelson Roth) attended an intensive four-day coach training last week with Coaching4Clergy (Val Hastings – Coaching4Clergy). At the end of the first day I wondered, “Is coaching for me?” Coaching similarities to my mentoring style helped me hang in there on day two and three. Val complimented my 30-minute coaching practice lab on Wednesday night, which I accepted; but also added, “I think I’ve been coaching some in the past while ministering to others.” Then, on Thursday morning, I woke up with an entire paradigm shift. I realized that I have never done coaching. My listening and creating an unhurried presence were the only similarities. I corrected my statement with Val from the previous night saying, “I realize now that I have never really coached till these days of training in Texas with Coaching4Clergy.” I learned a wonderful new tool to use in my ministry. oach practice lab on Wednesday night which I accepted; but also added, I think I’ve been coaching some in the past while ministering to others.
