Pandemic Leadership Shifts

April 21, 2021 By //  by J. Val Hastings

When the global pandemic came upon us, we had to step back and rethink how we did everything. As leaders, that meant looking at what had worked, how you got to the point of making that happen, and what were new ways of doing what we were already doing?

There were huge mind shifts that happened. Some of us went from cultivating in-person relationships to picking up the phone and having the same conversation, and then being pleasantly surprised to have even stronger connections.

As we emerge and get a glimpse of life beyond the pandemic, we need to do the same thing again. Whether you’re a business owner, pastor, or teacher, you may find that what worked during the pandemic may not work after the pandemic.

We also may need to let go of the things we’ve now realized had stopped working – possibly long before the pandemic.

Here are a few questions to consider while you shift:

  1. What do you really, really want? You get to decide what you reinstate and what you don’t.
  2. Crazy as it sounds, what part of COVID do you want to hold onto? I haven’t watched live TV with commercials in almost a year, and I’ve decided I don’t want to go back to regular TV. Also, I did a lot of traveling pre-COVID, and my wife and I have been talking about reducing that. We get to decide.
  3. What things had you taken for granted, or not realized how much you valued until they were taken away?
  4. How can you help someone else come through this pandemic strongly? What difference could you make? Who could you thank for the difference they made for you?
