The power of “Hmmm.”

October 20, 2015 By //  by J. Val Hastings

One of our students made a great comment in class today.  After observing a coaching demonstration, he highlighted the “noises without words” that the coach had made and how valuable those “noises” were.

The noises without words he was referring to included:  Hmmm, ah, yea and hum.

In the discussion that followed, we noted that these words cemented the relationship and conveyed to the other person genuine interest in what was being said.  We also noted how “noises without words” actually nudge the person to say more and to keep going.

If you are looking to move things forward and deepen the conversation, consider adding these power words.  Without really saying anything, you can make a significant contribution.

All the best to you,
