I recently had a great conversation with Master Coach Claire Pedrick. We discussed the question, “Why a coaching approach?” I am glad that we recorded our conversation so that you can hear what we discussed.
One of key reasons for a coaching approach is that too many leaders are doing others people’s work. The result is an ineffective leader and an underdeveloped-underutilized team!
The Leader-as-Coach places the work squarely on the responsible team member. And, using Claire’s tandem bike model, the leader’s work is defined as:
- Helping the work get started.
- Adding resources and energy when encountering the “ups and downs”.
The rest of the time the leader’s role is to tuck in and stay out of the way.
