Blog Post Roundup: Personal Reflection

September 20, 2023 By //  by J. Val Hastings

While I love blogging and what it does for my own awareness and growth, I don’t want my posts to be the internet’s best-kept secret. In this continuation of our blog post roundup (see the first post here), I’ve gathered my favorite posts that support your personal development.

Resiliency

During the pandemic, resiliency was the hot topic. Several years later it’s still just as important, especially with all the changes and conflicts going on in our world right now. The posts in this section are rooted in real-life situations of people I have coached or trained, and their stories of resilience.

One of the most eye-opening accounts was from the group of employees who were NOT let go during a major downsizing and their struggles with resilience.

  1. Coaching Skills for a Post-Layoff World
  2. Left Behind After Layoffs
  3. The Growth Edge
  4. Tacking the Times
  5. How Travel and Training Builds Resiliency for Leaders

Self-Awareness

Early on in my coach training, I heard one message repeatedly: self-awareness is key to being a coach. As coaches, it’s easy to lose sight of what we need to be at our best. This includes things like free time and breaks between clients, as well as an environment that supports focus and limits distractions. It also includes physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.

  1. Re-Entry
  2. Coaching Yourself to Focus
  3. Powerful Questions, Powerful Poses
  4. Handling Strong Emotions in Others
  5. Two Steps to Get Unstuck

Wellness

My favorite article in this section is “Seriously, get a hobby!” Whether you’re a coach, a CEO, a manager, or a supervisor, your work can sometimes become all consuming. It can even get so bad that our family and friends forget what we look like. Here’s the value of a hobby. Hobbies help us detach, get into learner mode, and connect with people outside of work. All good things that contribute much to our overall happiness and well-being.

  1. How To Give Yourself a Break (Even When There’s More Work to be Done)
  2. Seriously, get a hobby!
  3. Get Out of the House
  4. Pace, Space and Schedules
  5. Who Cares for the Leaders?
